President Biden reversed a Trump-era law which “prohibited transgender troops from transitioning” while they served in the military and which required that those serving enlist “under the sex they were assigned at birth.” The new order will allow military members “to receive gender reassignment surgery” paid for by military dollars and to serve openly as transgender members.
“Today, I repealed the discriminatory ban on transgender people serving in the military. It’s simple: America is safer when everyone qualified to serve can do so openly and with pride.”President Joe Biden
The Right has been largely silent on the matter.
The Left applauds the move. House Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called Trump’s 2019 order “heinous” and “discriminatory” and tweeted, “Trans rights are human rights!” Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) stated, “Trump’s ban on transgender servicemembers in our military was motivated purely by hate and discrimination,” and argued that Biden’s move will make our “military stronger and our nation safer.” “Today, equality prevailed,” stated Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY).
“Even before taking office, President Biden demonstrated that he values transgender Americans and recognizes that there is no place for discrimination in the federal government…Today’s action is one step forward and ensures that anyone who is willing to serve and is able to serve has that opportunity.”Mara Keisling, Executive Director of the National Center for Transgender Equality
