The United States once proudly identified itself as "One Nation Under God." This phrase, embedded in our Pledge of Allegiance, symbolized a collective acknowledgment of a specific higher power guiding our nation, The Most High God of The Bible. Yet today, this unity under God appears fragmented as schools discontinue the Pledge of Allegiance, athletes kneel during the national anthem, and references to God vanish from our currency. What does this shift signify for America?
The Pledge of Allegiance, once a daily ritual in schools, reinforced national unity and shared values. The decision by some schools to discontinue this practice reflects a broader trend towards secularism. While respecting diverse beliefs is essential, the absence of the Pledge raises questions about our commitment to the principles that have historically bound us together.
The sight of overpaid athletes kneeling during the national anthem has sparked intense debate. While intended as a protest against social injustices, it has also been perceived as a sign of disrespect towards a symbol of national unity. The anthem is a song for all Americans, and using it as a platform for protest can seem counterproductive to the unity it represents.
The gradual removal of references to God from our currency further highlights a shift away from acknowledging a divine influence in our public life. This change reflects a society increasingly uncomfortable with overt religious references in public spaces, a trend that could weaken the moral and ethical foundations upon which our nation was built.
In the Old Testament, God is described as "jealous," emphasizing His desire for exclusive devotion. This depiction underscores the importance of placing God at the center of our national identity. By removing God from our public institutions, we risk losing the sense of accountability and moral guidance that has historically underpinned our nation's success.
We find ourselves in a world polarized between the extremes of theocracy and anarchy. In this context, maintaining the delicate balance of separation between church and state while upholding the notion of being "One Nation Under God" becomes increasingly challenging. The question arises: Who is this God? Is it the Judeo-Christian Trinity, or merely a non-specific reference to a higher power?
A recent congressional prayer praising the Hindu Brahman and concluding with "Awoman" instead of "Amen" highlights the growing pluralism in our society. While inclusivity is important, such actions can dilute the traditional values that have long defined our nation. According to the US Senate website, "Throughout the years, the United States Senate has honored the historic separation of Church and State, but not the separation of God and State." This affirmation recognizes God as the sovereign lord of our nation, a belief that has guided our legislative body for over two centuries.
The distinction between separating church and state and not separating God and state is crucial to our national identity. As the church continues to undergo its’ own separation issues, this national separation ensures religious freedom while acknowledging the role of divine guidance in our public life. Our success as a nation is intertwined with this understanding, as it provides a moral compass and a sense of purpose beyond mere self-interest.
To be American means embracing the values of liberty, justice, and unity under a higher moral authority. It means recognizing that while we may separate religious institutions from government, we do not sever our collective acknowledgment of a guiding deity. Upholding the principle of "One Nation Under God" is essential to maintaining the fabric of our society and ensuring a prosperous future for all citizens.
In conclusion, as we navigate the complexities of a diverse and changing society, let us remember the foundational principles that have united us. Let us strive to be a nation that respects all beliefs while remaining true to the idea of being "One Nation Under God," specifically the One True God of The Bible: a beacon of hope and unity in an increasingly divided world.
