Adam Skelly, the owner of Canadian restaurant Adamson Barbecue, was arrested by the Tornoto Police on Thursday for “keeping his business open in defiance of emergency orders that aim to contain the spread of COVID-19.” He is facing 13 charges, both criminal and non-criminal, which include “attempting to obstruct police,” “holding an illegal gathering” and “operating a business without a license.” Each charge “could result in hefty fines” of up to $10,000 per individual charge and up to $100,000 per corporate charge. As the police arrested Skelly, a large crowd protested and demanded that officers let him go. It was reported that law enforcement seized the business and changed the restaurant’s locks after Skelly’s arrest in order “to ensure that we have no repeats of attempted reentry.”

The Left supports both the government lockdown mandates and the police officers’ actions. Law Professor Kerri Froc of the University of New Brunswick stated, “We do have the right to make individual decisions…but the question is: When do those rights start to infringe on the rights of other people?…The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.” Marcus Gee, a columnist for The Globe and Mail newspaper, wrote, “[Skelly] said he was fighting for the freedom of all Canadians to choose where to go, what businesses to visit and who to invite to their homes…Fortunately, most people will see his protest for what it is: a dangerous political stunt.” Gee added, “Mr. Skelly was showing his disrespect not just for the law but also for his fellow citizens, putting their lives at risk by encouraging them to gather and dine together at the height of a pandemic.”

“If you ask my opinion as to whether I’d be getting those concrete blocks out of storage right now and going if necessary and putting those in front of Adamson’s or any other place that violates the law in that manner, yes I would.”

    John Tory, Mayor of Tononto

The Right supports Skelly and notes the double standard of many governments. Breitbart News wrote, “While many small businesses in the Toronto region and the Peel region have been forced to close their doors due to lockdown, many larger stores, such as Walmart and Costco, have been allowed to remain open by the government.” Conservative Canadian parliament member Randy Hillier praised Skelly for his “courage, convictions, and resolve” in opening his restaurant and “testing the government’s unlawful orders.” He added, “I encourage all restaurants, all businesses, and all people to do the same.” So far, a GoFundMe set up in support of Skelly’s legal fees has raised over $275,000. Ezra Levant, founder of Rebel News, tweeted, “So Adam Skelly is banned from social media. That’s obviously unconstitutional. This stopped being about the virus a long time ago. It’s about control and power and censorship and obedience.”

“It’s absolutely shameful to watch the biased mainstream media attempt to bully and villify Adam Skelly’s courageous and peaceful acts of civil disobedience. That’s the same media that glorify Antifa and BLM thugs who destroy other people’s property. #FakeNews #AdamsonBBQ.”
