FACTS
Peter Nygard, fashion mogul and founder of women’s fashion company Nygård International, has been indicted by Manhattan federal prosecutors on nine counts, including sex-trafficking and racketeering. His victims were said to be “both adults and girls ages 14 to 17.”
“Nygard used the Nygard Group’s influence, as well as its employees, funds and other resources, to recruit and maintain adult and minor-aged female victims for NYGARD’s sexual gratification and the sexual gratification of his friends and business associates.”
Statement by the U.S. Attorney’s Office
According to the report by the Justice Department, “he controlled his victims through threats, false promises of modeling opportunities and other career advancement, financial support, and by other coercive means” and specifically targeted women “who had a history of abuse.” Nygard was arrested by Winnipeg police on Monday. Previously, in February of this year, a lawsuit was filed, which now includes 57 women and alleges that Nygard used his influence and wealth to recruit sexual victims.
RESPONSE
Both sides support Nygard’s arrest and indictment. “Peter Nygard is disgusting. I can’t even imagine how many others there are like him in that industry,” tweeted conservative political commentator and author Nick Adams.
“For decades there have been reports of Peter Nygard subjecting girls and women to sexual violence. This arrest hopefully will hopefully give some relief to the numerous survivors. Gratitude to the many who spoke out despite much duress and pressure. #MeToo.”

Nygard’s connections to Jeffrey Epstein, as well and French model scout Jean-Luc Brunel who was also arrested Wednesday, have been pointed out by many. “It’s way past time to hold rich powerful rapists to account,” wrote Gript Media contributor Máirín De Barra. In a nod to Epstein’s supposed “suicide,” one tweet read, “Peter Nygard didn’t kill himself.”
“Prince Andrew’s best friends include: Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, Harvey Weinstein, Peter Nygard. ‘Tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are’. -Unknown (but my mom said this all the time).”
