FACTS

A multitude of people, including celebrities such as Snoop Dog and Miley Cyrus, threatened to leave the U.S if Trump was elected in the 2016 elections. Many said Canada would be their destination of choice, with others mentioning the likes of Spain, South Africa, and Australia. Singer Cher went so far as to say she would jet to Jupiter should Trump be elected. However, few, if any, followed through. Similar threats are again being made this year from both sides of the aisle, including from John Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigan, who are Biden supporters, and rapper Lil Pump, who recently came out in support of President Trump. So, as we await the results of the grueling 2020 elections…

The Right believes it’s all empty talk. “For as long as there have been elections, there have been high-profile people threatening to leave the country if the race doesn’t go their way,” wrote journalist Tyler McCarthy. Butler County, Ohio, Sheriff Richard K. Jones has offered to help pay for the departing ticket of any celebrity who will actually follow through with their threat, repeating his offer from 2016. He stated, “Hell, I’ll even help them pack,” and added, “These are mostly the same people who don’t like police, that doesn’t like first responders. I hope you do leave.” Investigative reporter Diane Dimond said, “This is not an endorsement of either candidate now running for president,” but to the citizens threatening to leave the U.S. if their candidate loses, she stated, “Buh-bye, and may I hold the door for you?”

“Legend and his model-turned-TV personality wife, Chrissy Teigen, are living proof that if you work hard in America, you can achieve your dreams, no matter where you came from and no matter what your race. Where exactly will Legend find a better democracy, with a superior legal system and no hint of racism?”

“The number of Americans, particularly young women, who say they desire to leave the U.S. permanently is on the rise. In fact, 40% of women younger than 30 say they would like to leave, the [Gallup World] study showed,” wrote USA Today reporter Jessica Menton. Kim Hjelmgaard, another USA Today world affairs correspondent, said that for many black Americans, moving out of the country is “an exercise in self-preservation” following recent racial conflict in the U.S. “If Trump is re-elected—which he will not be; I’m predicting right now he’s gonna lose—if by some happenstance he should be, I’ll see you on the next plane,” stated American singer Bruce Springsteen. Tommy Lee, drummer for the heavy metal band Motley Crew, said he’d return to his homeland of Greece if Trump is reelected, stating, “The thing that stings the most is that I feel like we’re embarrassing. I feel like people in Europe and the rest of the world look at America and think: ‘What the f*** are you guys doing over there? Stop voting for celebrities and get someone real to run the country.'”
