FACTS
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi introduced a proposal on Friday which, if approved, would remove all gendered terms from the House of Representative rules. Among other things, the package would also permanently establish an Office of Diversity and Inclusion, as well as “revokes floor privileges for former members convicted of election-related crimes.” Terms such as “he” and “she” would be replaced with “member,” pronouns such as “father” or “sister” would be replaced by “parent” or “sibling,” and “aunt” and “uncle” would be replaced with “parent’s sibling.”
RIGHT
The Right balks at the proposal and Democrats’ priorities. “Instead of reviving the economy, restoring our Constitutional freedoms, and delivering results for the American people, Speaker Pelosi has chosen her debut legislation – which would ban words like mother, sister and daughter,” stated New York Rep. Elise Stefanik. Regarding the legislation, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy tweeted, “This is stupid. Signed, – A father, son, and brother.” Samaritan’s Purse President Franklin Graham asked, “Can you believe that they actually propose to strike the use of words including father, mother, son, aunt, uncle, & wife?” Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) noted Pelosi’s Twitter profile description which includes “grandmother” and tweeted, “Hey @SpeakerPelosi, when you’re done at the hair salon you might want to change your Twitter bio. You wouldn’t want to offend anyone!”
“Democrat Leadership is urging Congress to ban gendered language from official House Rules and censor the free speech rights of members and staff. The American people need to know that, despite the serious issues facing our country, these are the top priorities for Speaker Pelosi.”
Rep. Dan Meuser (R-PA)

LEFT
While left-leaning media outlets have been decidedly quiet on the proposal, many on the left are in support of the measure. House Rules Chair and co-sponsor of the bill, Jim McGovern, stated that “only in Congress would it be a scandal to be succinct. We are being inclusive, efficient and accurate.”
