While the US recently experienced 62,000 new COVID-19 cases in a single day, the death rate has dropped by 75% in the last several weeks. An article from The Atlantic reported that there are many possibilities for this phenomenon, including: younger COVID victims with stronger immune systems; greater testing – meaning more mild cases confirmed, thus lowering the death rate; and increased understanding of and treatment for the virus.
The Left believes that perspectives of optimism, causing increased carelessness, will soon turn into devastation. Many believe that death rates are soon again going to soar. Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, blamed rising cases on states reopening too soon and warned of the consequences if people fail to adhere to safety measures. “Who Are You Going to Trust—Dr. Fauci or Texas’ Joke of a Lieutenant Governor?” the title of a Daily Beast article asked, referencing Dan Patrick, who has been sharply criticized. The Left has accused Trump of politicizing wearing a mask.

Refusing to wear a face mask during the Covid-19 pandemic should be as socially unacceptable as drunk-driving or driving without using a seat belt, a UK science official says. https://t.co/7Au9iEUa6R— CNN International (@cnni) July 12, 2020
The Right is optimistic. It is believed that the media’s hyperfocus on cases rather than deaths is an attempt to cause panic, push continued lock-down measures, and ultimately harm Trump. A recent Gallup/Knight Foundation survey found that Republicans believe the COVID-19 death rates to be “exaggerated.” The New York Post wrote that due to early “terrifying” death estimates, the country was scared into “lockdowns that have done incalculable harm to the economy,” as well as having other dire consequences. It was estimated, based on studies in other countries, that the US has on average 20-25% more cases than have been confirmed, thus dropping the virus death rate even lower than what it is currently said to be.
“Using those overstated estimates is a recipe for panic, bad public policy — and continued lockdowns that may delay to return to normality.”Excerpt from “Unreported Truths about COVID-19 and Lockdowns: Part 1: Introduction and Death Counts and Estimates” by Alex Berenson
