The unassuming, multi-faceted foam shoe that celebrities and nurses alike are rocking en masse: Crocs. This year, as other shoe sales have plummeted by 20%, Crocs’ sales have risen by 48%. “Yep, 2020 belongs to Crocs,” one article put it. Collaborations with celebrities such as Post Malone and the Grateful Dead have previously sold out within an hour, and Crocs’ most recent collab, with Puerto Rican pop star Bad Bunny, sold out within 16 minutes – jumping from a base price of $64 the morning they were released to a whopping $265 on resale websites on the very same day.
Crocs’ popularity has been on the rise for the past decade; before that, they were mainly used by hospital and restaurant employees who were on their feet all day, due to the shoes’ comfortability. But as they gained popularity, hipsters and influencers started donning the foam clogs, as well. They now have a “cult following.” In 2017, high-end design label Balenciaga collaborated with the brand for their fall runway show, with models wearing platform, embellished versions of the shoe down the runway. The pairs went for $850 a pop and sold out before the official release. Next up? It was recently rumored that the newest-coming collaboration will be with pop star Justin Bieber, a move some say is the “biggest Crocs drop to date.”
