“Juno” and “Inception” star Ellen Page has come out as transgender and will now go by Elliot Page. The announcement was made Tuesday morning in a statement on Page’s social media platforms. “I love that I am trans. And I love that I am queer. And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I thrive. To all trans people who deal with harassment, self-loathing, abuse, and the threat of violence every day: I see you, I love you and I will do everything I can to change this world for the better,” read the end of the statement. Page, 33, has been married to choreographer and professional dancer Emma Portner since 2018.
Conservative parody Twitter account Titania McGrath tweeted, “I am so proud of Elliot Page for transitioning and becoming a beacon of hope for humanity. That said, now that Page is a straight man, he is officially an oppressor and deserves nothing but our contempt.” In response to a New York Times tweet stating, “Elliot Page, the Oscar-nominated star of ‘Juno,’ announced on Tuesday that he is transgender,” Kylee Zempel, the assistant editor of The Federalist, wrote, “The Oscar-nominated star of ‘Juno’ is a woman named Ellen Page.” Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee noted, “Actress Ellen Page has declared that s/he now identifies as male & demands to be called ‘Elliot.’ What’s shocking is that anyone would actually want to be identified as a white male these days. We’re blamed for EVERYTHING!” Becket Cook, a former fashion production designer for the likes of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, tweeted, “So, Ellen Page can suddenly become ‘Elliot Page,’ but my choice to no longer identify as gay because I follow Christ is anathema.”
“Sooo ELLEN Page is now a straight White male named Elliot that is married to a lesbian? I just want to make sure I have the specifics right.”Graham Allen, Contributor at Turning Point USA
The Left celebrates the announcement. Hollywood was quick to congratulate Page. “Elliot rules!” wrote singer Miley Cyrus. Progressive actor and producer Mark Ruffalo tweeted, “You have made this world a more tolerant and loving place with your commitment, courage, and vulnerability. We are lucky to have public figures like you.” The likes of Emmy Rossum, Alyssa Milano, Ellen DeGeneres, and Ilana Glazer joined in the praise. “Elliot Page has given us fantastic characters on-screen, and has been an outspoken advocate for all LGBTQ people. He will now be an inspiration to countless trans and non-binary people,” stated Nick Adams, the Director of Transgender Media at Glaad.
“With so few public figures, it feels like trans masculine people barely register in the collective imagination, meaning we miss out on so many stories of trans leading men, binary-breaking heroes, and possibility models. I want to welcome and congratulate Elliot on his journey and cannot wait to see what he does and how his presence — alongside so many other non-binary, trans femme, and trans masc folks — continues to shift culture.”Rhys Ernst, Director and Producer
