Elon Musk, now with a net worth of $189.7 billion, has surpassed Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos as the world’s richest person. In December, he announced during an interview with Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner that he would be “selling most of his material possessions” to further his pursuit of colonizing Mars. He had previously announced the same in a Twitter post in May. He currently has four of his homes still listed for sale, after previously selling two others.
“In fact, I’ll have basically almost no possessions with a monetary value, apart from the stock in the companies. If things are intense at work, I like just sleeping in the factory or the office. And I obviously need a place if my kids are there. So, I’ll just rent a place or something.”

South African TV presenter and fashion designer Maps Maponyane tweeted, “With Elon Musk’s personal wealth currently at $190 Billion, if he had to spend $1 million every day, it would take 523 years to get through it. Or, 52.3 years if he spent $10 million, every single day. Mind-blowing.”
“It’s also pretty possible that this estimate of Elon Musk’s net worth is actually too low. Most of Musk’s wealth comes from Tesla, which has a market cap. But some of Elon’s money comes from SpaceX, which is private. What if SpaceX is worth more than its last $45B valuation?”Teddy Schleifer, Writer for Recode Tech News Site
Many on the Left criticize his wealth, and billionaires as a whole. “One thing I’ll never get over is people thinking that Elon Musk overtaking Jess Bezos in wealth is ‘something to be celebrated’ and not the incredibly grim milestone that it actually is.” However, in response to Sen. Bernie Sander’s criticism of Musk’s wealth, Appsbar co-founder Michael Borao replied, “@elonmusk has created 50,000+ jobs. How many have you created?” He also went on to note, “@SenSanders wealth rises during same period despite zero contribution to economy.”
Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos have $370,000,000,000 in combined wealth. Two people. This is why we see headlines like this. Capitalism is the disease, socialism is the cure. pic.twitter.com/Wk9LBkTgqW— 🔻comrade elyjah🔻 (@itsonlyelyjah) January 7, 2021
