West Virginia Governor invites Virginia counties to Secede
As we reported back in November, the Democrats in Virginia scored an unprecedented victory in the state elections and took control of both houses of the state legislature as well as the statewide offices. Since taking office, the Democrats, led by Governor Ralph Northam, have introduced a raft of progressive legislation headlined by restrictions on the possession and sale of firearms. Even after thousands of Second Amendment advocates turned up in Richmond to protest the legislation, the Virginia legislature passed the bills. More than 90 counties in localities in the state of Virginia have declared themselves Second Amendment sanctuaries and have said they will refuse to enforce the new laws. On Tuesday, West Virginia Governor Jim Justice gave a speech endorsing a proposal from his state legislature to allow counties in Virginia to essentially secede and join West Virginia. House Concurrent Resolution 8, introduced by 20 Republican and one Independent member of the West Virginia legislature cites the historic relationship between the two states and invites Virginia counties and localities to hold a vote to leave Virginia and join West Virginia.
The Left has generally called the proposal “unimaginable.” While technically constitutional, the proposal would need to pass in the West Virginia general assembly and then also be passed by the Virginia general assembly. Once passed by the legislatures in both states, Virginia counties would then need to hold a vote to determine whether they stayed a part of Virginia or joined West Virginia. The Senate Majority Leader of Virginia, Dick Saslaw (D) implied that West Virginia should focus on fixing its high poverty rate and called the proposal “preposterous.”
West Virginian Republican lawmaker Gary Howell said that he helped introduce House Concurrent Resolution 8 because many “Virginians have been reaching out to him for help protecting their Constitutional rights.” Jerry Falwell, President of Liberty University and prominent supporter of President Donald Trump was on stage with Governor Justice as the Governor gave his speech. Falwell echoed the sentiment of many Virginia conservatives when he said, “Democrat leaders in Richmond, through their elitism and radicalism, have left a nearly unrecognizable state in their wake, and they are using their power to strip away the God-given rights held by every person in the state, despite their due protections under the U.S. Constitution.”
