For only the third time in history, a sitting president of the United States has been formally impeached. The pending charges are essentially Trump’s alleged interference with the elections, by asking Ukraine to investigate Hunter Biden in return for aid. (The first US impeachment was against Johnson). The Democrats filed a 111-page impeachment brief against the president on Saturday, Jan 18th stating inter alia:

The Framers therefore would have considered a President’s attempt to
corrupt America’s democratic processes by demanding political favors from foreign powers to be a singularly pernicious act.

    Trial Memorandum p.5

The highlights of the first two days recounted by C-Span are as follows:

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is joyous, was seen handing out pens with her own signature on them for the event. Some on the left believe, “the House Speaker has bent over backward to say publicly and privately this is … somber, this is not a time for celebration.”

The right is not happy, but they are well aware of the almost certain unlikelihood of a conviction from the senate, as the majority of the sente is republican, and the constitution requires a 2/3 majority to win.
