Chaos continues to ensue in Kenosha, Wisconsin, after the police shooting of Jacob Blake last Sunday. In the nights of protesting and rioting that have followed, 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse fatally shot two people and injured a third “as demonstrators and armed civilians faced off” against each other. An investigation into the shooting of Blake, who was paralyzed from the waist down after being shot seven times, is currently underway by the Wisconsin Department of Justice. Additionally, Rittenhouse is being held on charges including first-degree intentional homicide. If found guilty, he could face life in prison.
The Right condemns the rioting and blames local government for the chaos. Conservative political commentator Tucker Carlson tweeted, “Kenosha has devolved into anarchy because the authorities in charge of the city abandoned it.”
“Public officials have three duties here: calming passions, restoring order to protect the innocent, and providing justice under the law for Mr. Blake and the police who shot him. But you cannot have justice without order.”The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board
Regarding these recent events, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany stated, “All of these cities are Democrat run. All of these cities have experienced anarchy, violence, and destruction in recent days—the opposite of a peaceful protest.”
The Left supports the protestors and condemns the police officer’s actions in the case of Jacob Blake.
“Neither noncompliance with a police order nor unconnected past crimes justifies a death sentence, and it is inexcusable to try to use those excuses. Enough is enough.”The Washington Post Editorial Board
Presidential candidate Joe Biden stated, “Once again, a Black man, Jacob Blake, has been shot by the police in broad daylight, with the whole world watching.” The Left also mocks the Rights’ “law and order” trumpeting, calling out their hypocrisy in defending Rittenhouse’s actions due to his white, male, conservative status. Comedian and political commentator John Oliver noted “let’s be clear. A 17-year-old vigilante with a rifle cannot maintain order, because a 17-year-old vigilante with a rifle trying to maintain order is himself the definition of disorder.”
If they don’t take action after this, every one of Fox News’s executives, directors, and advertisers is complicit in Tucker Carlson’s racist, murderous rants. https://t.co/YbT8as1kHg— Robert Reich (@RBReich) August 27, 2020
