Major League Baseball (MLB) announced Friday that they will boycott the state of Georgia after the state’s recent passage of new election legislation. The new laws include measures similar to those in many other states, such as photo I.D. requirement for those voting by absentee ballot and “restricting political organizations from offering refreshments to voters in line.”
“Over the last week, we have engaged in thoughtful conversations with Clubs, former and current players, the Players Association, and The Players Alliance, among others, to listen to their views. I have decided that the best way to demonstrate our values as a sport is by relocating this year’s All-Star Game and MLB Draft.”Rob Manfred, MLB Commissioner
They announced that they will be holding the All-Star Game in Colorado instead.
The Right has strongly criticized MLB’s move and called out the Left’s hypocrisy. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp stated that “contrary to the hyper-partisan rhetoric you may have heard…this new law will expand voting access.” Political commentator Liz Wheeler asked, “So Joe Biden will endorse the @MLB moving the All Star game out of GA based on a lie…But Biden won’t endorse a boycott of the 2022 Olympics in China due to literal genocide? Okaaaaay.” Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) noted “@MLB caves to pressure & moves draft & #AllStarGame out of Georgia on the same week they announce a deal with a company backed by the genocidal Communist Party of #China.”
“Hey Joe Biden, you gonna boycott the Beijing Olympics because of mass genocide? Or are you just into hurting Atlanta small businesses that were planning on the all-star game? Americans are sick of this woke BS. @BLM is a disgrace.”Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX)
Still others pointed out that MLB is moving the all-star game to Colorado – a state which also “has voter I.D. laws” and other similar measures to those that Georgia just passed. “Empty virtue signal move,” tweeted Black Guns Matter nonprofit founder Maj Toure.
The Left supports MLB’s move and argues that it is ultimately the fault of Republicans who passed Georgia’s “voter restriction” laws that Atlanta’s economy will be hurt.
“The Governor and the legislature are deliberately making it harder for Black voters to vote. They know it. Everybody knows it, and this egregious and immoral assault on voting rights has also put our state’s economy at grave risk.”Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA)
President Biden referred to the new legislation as “Jim Crow in the 21st century.” Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) stated, “We must stand our ground” and expressed hope that the boycott will “result in changes in the law.” Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said that MLB’s decision is “unfortunately…the 1st of many dominoes to fall, until the unnecessary barriers put in place to restrict access to the ballot box are removed.”
