New York State legislators have passed a new bill which will give one-time payments of up to $15,600 to illegal immigrants who are unemployed due to Covid. The measure was included as part of the state’s recent $212 billion annual state budget. The amount individuals will receive is “equivalent to $300 per week for the last year.” The measure far surpasses California’s recent one-time payments of $500 to undocumented workers. Nearly three-hundred thousand people in New York are estimated to be recipients of the payments. Also included in the budget were new tax changes which will make New York the highest taxed state in the country for millionaires.
Most Democrats support the bill, arguing that it is a necessary measure for undocumented workers who were unable to receive unemployment benefits or federal aid during the pandemic.
“This nation’s economy has long been built on the backs of our undocumented workforce…This long overdue relief will offer hundreds of thousands of New York’s excluded workers the financial support they need to be able to provide for themselves and their families.”Sen. Jessica Ramos (D-NY)
“It is past due time for us to put people first and transform our state’s history of austerity into a future of investment,” stated New York State Assembly Member Carmen De La Rosa.
Republicans do not support the bill. Two members of the House of Representatives have demanded an audit of the tax-payer funded budget. “The American people deserve to know why their money is being funneled to illegal immigrants over the working class,” stated, Rep. Jason Smith (R-MO). Not the Bee, sister news company of satire news site The Babylon Bee, wrote, “The more you think about this, the more insane it becomes.”
“Let me get this straight: Actual American citizens are struggling. But Dems want to send cash payments to people in Central America. And if you’re an illegal immigrant in New York? NY Dems want to give you $15,600. This is madness.”Steve Scalise, United States House of Representatives minority whip
