FACTS

A man was shot to death in Portland, Oregon, on Saturday after a night of clashes between a caravan of pro-police Trump supporters and Black Lives Matter (BLM) activists and Antifa protestors. The victim was said to be Aaron “Jay” Danielson, also known as Jay Bishop, who is reported to have been associated with right-wing group Patriot Prayer. No arrests have yet been made in relation to the shooting, and Portland Chief of Police Chuck Lovell has said an investigation into the matter is underway. Nearly 100 nights of BLM protests have commenced in Portland since the death of George Floyd.

    LEFT

The Left blames President Trump for the chaos, arguing that it is under his leadership that the riots and violence are occurring. Louisiana Representative Cedric Richmond stated, “This is his America. So how do you break this country and then run for reelection saying, ‘I want to fix everything that I just destroyed?'” Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler blamed Trump who he said has “created the hate and the division,” and Oregon Governor Kate Brown seconded the notion.

“[Trump] may believe mouthing the words ‘law and order’ makes him strong, but his failure to call on his own supporters to stop acting as an armed militia in this country shows you how weak he is. Does anyone believe there will be less violence…if Donald Trump is reelected?”

Matt Viser, national political reporter at The Washington Post

    RIGHT

The Right blames the Left and Democratic leadership in cities such as Portland. US Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf criticized local government officials for “not allowing law enforcement to do their job” to control the violence and for continuing “to refuse federal assistance to bring this to an end.” Manager of conservative news outlet Human Events Ian Miles Cheong stated that Wheeler is “unfit to lead Portland.”

“You want to talk about Donald Trump’s America. Most of Donald Trump’s America is peaceful…It is a Democrat-led city in Portland that we’re talking about this morning who just yesterday denied help once again from the federal government.”
