FACTS
While just two weeks ago President Trump held a near one-point lead over Presidential-hopeful Joe Biden, the tables have turned. A recent national poll revealed that Biden currently holds a 5+ point lead over Trump. The coronavirus pandemic, the economy, and healthcare were the issues of top importance selected by the voters in the poll. An editor with the poll organization wrote that “Americans are judging their leaders through a pandemic prism,” adding that this fact doesn’t seem to be favoring President Trump.
On the other hand, election betting odds, which has consistently been one of the closest determiners of election accuracy, shows President Trump ahead by a significant margin.
LEFT
The Left has put much blame on Trump for his handling of the COVID-19 crisis, and they believe that Americans will vote him out of office in November. “Trump’s a politician, not a magician,” said CNN analyst Harry Enten, predicting that if Trump’s ratings continue to be what they are now, a second surprise-win is highly unlikely for him. Many Democrats are not thrilled with their party’s candidate but will do whatever it takes to rally behind Biden to ensure Trump’s defeat.
RIGHT
The Right views the Left’s constant and widespread Trump-blaming as ludicrousy, but knows it could affect his ratings and put a bad taste in people’s mouth. While the virus and ensuing economic woes are not Trump’s fault, these factors will be paramount in this election cycle. Rather than it being a Trump versus Biden election, a senior political strategist for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce called it a “Donald J. Trump versus the coronavirus and the recovery” election, adding “Biden is a sideshow.”
Still, some believe that due to the Democratic candidate, the odds are still in Trump’s favor. Neil Newhouse, a GOP pollster guru, said that it is extremely difficult to predict what will happen so many months out from the election. He highlighted the fact that Hillary Clinton was shown to have a 10 point lead in some states this same time last election year, and yet Trump won the presidency.
