The Supreme Court of the United States is currently hearing arguments over a highly contentious Louisiana law which requires that any doctor who performs abortions is also able to admit patients to a hospital. Junior Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh have signaled that they may support upholding the restrictions on abortion as constitutional. Speaking to a crowd that gathered in protest to the law and its restrictions on Wednesday, Senator Chuck Schumer (D. NY) said made several statements that some are saying have crossed the line. He said that they were attacking women’s fundamental rights,
“I want to tell you Gorsuch. I want to tell you Kavanaugh. You have released the whirlwind and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions” –Chuck Schumer
Thus far the left has been slow to either clarify or condemn the comments by Senator Schumer. CNN posted a quick article outlining the facts.
Becket Adams wrote a piece for the Washington Examiner which attempts to make sense of Schumer’s comments. Republican Senator Tom Cotton Slammed Schumer’s threats on Wednesday claiming that if a republican had said something like that it would be all over the news, per the Daily Caller’s reporting. Cotton said,
“The Democratic Party is so radicalized on abortion politics that today Chuck Schumer threatened Justice Gorsuch and Justice Kavanaugh if they didn’t strike down a simple, common-sense, pro-woman law that simply says that abortion doctors need to have admission privileges at a local hospital… Chuck Schumer’s bully tactics aren’t getting much air time right now because there are so many people in bed with his defense of abortion and his attack on an independent judiciary. These bullying tactics need to stop.” –Senator Tom Cotton
“This morning, Senator Schumer spoke at a rally in front of the Supreme Court while a case was being argued inside. Senator Schumer referred to two Members of the Court by name and said he wanted to tell them that “You have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price. You will not know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.” Justices know that criticism comes with the territory, but threatening statements of this sort from the highest levels of government are not only inappropriate, they are dangerous.
