FACTS
Seattle and Portland saw rioting in the streets by left-wing activists even after Biden was sworn into office as president on Wednesday. They burned American and “Biden for President” flags and declared, “He won’t save us,” referring to the new president. Those present in the crowds had demands ranging from demolishing ICE and the police, to “No borders,” to “revenge” regarding racial injustice. In Portland, crowds broke windows at the headquarters for the Democratic Party, and in Seattle, people spray painted buildings and broke windows as they marched through the streets.
RIGHT
The Right condemns the riots, as they have all along. Brandon Tatum, a public speaker and former police officer noted, “These leftists riot whether they win or lose.”
LEFT
Extreme leftists believes that rioters’ actions are necessary in order to see the changes that they desire in our country. One Twitter user called progressive, Democratic Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler a “straight up Fascist” after he announced that the city will implement “harsher penalties” for those caught rioting.
“I don’t get why so many people thought the #PortlandProtest had anything to do with Trump…It doesn’t. It’s about the broken system that produced Trump & problems that we’ve fought long before Trump. Nothing was changed by Biden getting sworn in. We can’t pretend it did.”
Amanda Siebe, former Democratic Candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives
Many who are center-left and some progressives, however, condemn the rioting, as well.
