Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced Tuesday that the state is ending all Covid restrictions, including the mask mandate, and that they will be fully open moving forward. “Texas is OPEN 100%. EVERYTHING,” he tweeted. He added, “Personal vigilance to follow the safe standards is still needed to contain COVID. It’s just that now state mandates are no longer needed.” The states of Michigan, Louisiana, and Mississippi followed suit, announcing the end of their mask mandates, as well.
“We are not going to continue to use the heavy hand of government when it is no longer justified by the reality we see around us.”Gov. Tate Reeves, Governor of Mississippi
The Right supports the decision. Founder of 21st Century Wire, Patrick Henningsen, tweeted, “He’s giving people their lives back from the crazed bureaucrats and hypochondriacs who’ve stolen them.” South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem wrote, “Keep doing the right thing @GregAbbott_TX. The media is attacking you because they can’t allow freedom to succeed. It would disprove their entire agenda.” Conservative gameshow host Chuck Woolery noted, “Texas is now as open as Florida, and the media is going wild. The big thing is masks. They want you masked up for life.”
“To all the leftists crying because Texas and Mississippi have announced they will resume FREEDOM— did you know that you are still welcome to stay in your home all day and double mask? You don’t need a government mandate to be a paranoid recluse.”Candace Owens, Author and Political Activist and Commentator
All these triggered people, good lord. Does no one have personal responsibility anymore? You still have the freedom to wear a mask, social distance, and everything else. It’s really not that difficult. If you’re that concerned, stay home.— Z (@TheZeeebs) March 2, 2021
The Left condemns the move. “If you’re interested in knowing what doctors say will keep you, your business, and your family safe, listen to me and the doctors,” stated Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins, a Democrat. Transgender rights activist Nicole Maines scolded the governor, tweeting, “You are knowingly putting people’s lives in danger.”
“This latest announcement by Texas Governor Greg Abbott to open up every business and school 100% before most people have been vaccinated just seems like a great time for @BetoORourke to announce his campaign for governor in 2022.”Amee Vanderpool, Independent Journalist
“Texas Gov. Abbott’s decision to end the mask mandate and open ‘everything’ is a reminder of how he and many leaders don’t need Trump to showcase selfishness and indifference toward a rising death count,” argued journalist and filmmaker Steven Beschloss. Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX) stated, “Governor Abbott’s failure to listen to science and medical advice will cost Texans their lives.”
