FACTS
Two Los Angeles County sheriff deputies were shot multiple times by an unknown gunman who approached their vehicle on Saturday evening. The incident, which was caught on film, showed a man approach the passenger side window, shoot the deputies multiple times at point-blank range, then escape on foot. Both officers, whose names have not been publicly released, are in critical condition. One deputy was said to be a 31-year-old mother, the other a 24-year-old man. A manhunt, with a $100,000 reward, is currently underway for the shooter. Following the incident, protestors were reported to have gathered at the hospital where the deputies were being treated, “chanting anti-law enforcement slogans” and blocking the entry. Two people were arrested.
LEFT
The Left is varied in their response. Presidential candidate Joe Biden tweeted:
“This cold-blooded shooting is unconscionable and the perpetrator must be brought to justice. Violence of any kind is wrong; those who commit it should be caught and punished.”

The Washington Post Editorial Board noted, “[The ambush shooting] was also a reminder of what is too often ignored: that many police are justified in feeling threatened as they patrol the communities they are charged to serve and protect.” On the other hand, Kevin Wharton Price, a leader of the black nationalist Africa Town Coalition and one of the Black Lives Matter protestors present, referred to the deputies as “two of America’s most notorious gang members.” The LA Sheriff’s Department has “come under fire during recent protests” regarding what some view to be unnecessary and brutal use of force.

RIGHT
The Right believes recent anti-police rhetoric has a part to play in the shooting:
“This is just a somber reminder that this is a dangerous job, and actions and words have consequences. Our job does not get any easier because people do not like law enforcement.”
Sheriff Alex Villanueva, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department
Political adviser and former White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders tweeted, “Let’s call the cowardly attack on two police officers in LA what it is – evil. Every American should be outraged by the senseless violence.” Another source read, “The Compton shooting last night is the most recent example of how anti-police sentiment has inspired attacks on innocent police officers and endangered their lives,” since protests began in early May.
To the protesters blocking the entrance & exit of the HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOM yelling “We hope they die” referring to 2 LA Sheriff’s ambushed today in #Compton: DO NOT BLOCK EMERGENCY ENTRIES & EXITS TO THE HOSPITAL. People’s lives are at stake when ambulances can’t get through.
