FACTS

It was officially announced on Tuesday that the US will withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), an agency which President Trump has repeatedly accused of misinformation and failure to act regarding COVID-19. The decision will go into effect on July 6th of next year.

    RIGHT

The Right, who is critical of the WHO, has mixed thoughts as to the move. The Republicans on the House Foreign Affairs Committee recently issued a report that calls for an “international investigation into the WHO’s actions” and for the WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom, whom they sharply criticize, to resign. Rather than leave the WHO, they believe the US “can affect more change within the organization as a member.” Other conservatives support resigning, with Rep. Rick Crawford (R-Ark.) stating, “Withdrawing from the WHO is an important action in accountability for our country and for all countries who’ve suffered due to COVID.”

“I am proud that our country will no longer be sending taxpayer dollars to support this radical regime.”

Allan Parker, President of The Justice Foundation

    LEFT

The Left does not support the move. “This decision is irresponsible, reckless, and utterly incomprehensible. Withdrawing from the WHO in the midst of the greatest public health crisis of our lifetime is a self-destructive move. More Americans will be hurt by this careless choice,” tweeted Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) regarding the move. Tom Bollyky, director of the global health program at the Council on Foreign Relations, agreed, calling it “unconscionable.” Many are hopeful that if Biden is elected, the withdrawal will not have a chance to be enacted. Some on the Left have defended the WHO, saying its “initial missteps can be attributed to China’s lack of transparency in the early stages of the outbreak.”
