The internet erupted this week after a short clip from CNN’s Don Lemon went viral. Lemon had political pundits Rick Wilson and Wajahat Ali on his show this past Saturday to discuss the ongoing impeachment trial of President Trump. During the interview, Wilson and Ali began joking about the stupidity of President Trump – particularly his inability to locate the country of Ukraine on a map. They went on to implicate the intelligence of his supporters, using redneck voices. Lemon can be seen laughing uncontrollably throughout, even putting his head down on his desk at one point. Below is the whole six-minute interview with Wilson and Ali for context, the segment at issue begins around minute 3:10 in the video below. Lemon made clarifying statements about the exchange on Tuesday night in the face of the growing backlash.
Thus far the political left has been relatively quiet on this. The Huffington Post published a piece describing Lemon’s clarification, namely that he was laughing at a joke about president trump and didn’t hear the other derogatory comments.
“Just to make this perfectly clear, I was laughing at the joke and not at any group of people,”– Don Lemon
Predictably, Republicans and conservatives have responded with indignation, quick to remind the Lemon that 65 million people voted for Trump and demeaning all of them is neither good politics nor civil. Fox News chronicled the blowback from commentators on the Right. Columnist Mark Steyn claimed – on Tucker Carlson’s show – that this is just another example of out of touch left-wing elitism.
David Rubin, a libertarian with a popular podcast and Michael Malice, another libertarian thinker and writer, sat down to discuss the Lemon video and what it means about the state of our culture.
