FACTS

The United States Postal Service (USPS) recently sent letters to dozens of states warning that the massive influx of time-sensitive election mail may be “incongruous with the Postal Service’s” standard delivery time. Additionally, USPS CEO Louis DeJoy has recently implemented policy changes including eliminating overtime and halting “late delivery trips” sometimes needed to ensure on-time arrivals. Referring to election-fund measures in the Democratic relief bill, President Trump stated last week, “If we don’t make a deal, that means they don’t get the money.” Consequently, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has called the House back into session for an emergency vote on legislation intended to “prohibit changes at the [USPS].”

    LEFT

The Left is outraged and argues that these actions are evidence that Trump and DeJoy are in cahoots to sabotage the elections. The changes are said to be “a grave threat to the integrity of the election,” and Pelosi stated, “Lives, livelihoods, and the life of our American Democracy are under threat from the president.”

“What you are witnessing is a president of the United States who is doing everything he can to suppress the vote, make it harder for people to engage in mail-in balloting at a time when people will be putting their lives on the line by having to go out to a polling station and vote.”

    RIGHT

The Right dismisses sabotage conspiracies and points out that DeJoy does not answer to the president. USPS spokesperson David Partenheimer stated that “the notion that the Postmaster General makes decisions concerning the Postal Service at the direction of the President is wholly misplaced and off-base.” It is argued that Democrats – who are pushing for mail-in-voting despite many states’ unpreparedness and the potential for USPS to be unable to quickly process such high volumes – are the ones who would be responsible for an election “disaster.”

“The people who really need a wake-up call are election officials in states like Michigan and New York, and the media are giving them a pass.”
