As we previously reported, an African-American man named George Floyd died while in Police custody on Monday. A cellphone video of the event shows a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, kneeling on Mr. Floyd’s neck as Mr. Floyd cries out that he cannot breathe. Former MPD Officer Chauvin was taken into custody today on charges of murder and manslaughter. Mr. Floyd’s death sparked protests Tuesday night that have since turned into looting and violence. That violence has led to multiple businesses being burned to the ground and looted. The Minneapolis Police Department’s 3rd Precinct building was also overrun and set on fire Wednesday evening. During the violence near the 3rd Precinct building, one man, Calvin Lewis Horton Jr., was fatally shot. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz activated the National Guard and has deployed roughly 500 troops to the Minneapolis area. As the National Guard helped to clear the area around the 3rd Precinct, a CNN reporter was arrested in the middle of a live report. The violence has since spread outside of Minneapolis to other areas of Minnesota as well as cities in other states. Seven people were shot at a protest in Louisville, Kentucky. Gunshots were also fired near the Capitol building in Denver, Colorado during a protest over Mr. Floyd’s death. Protestors in Minneapolis on Thursday evening threatened to spread violence to areas outside of the city as revenge for Mr. Floyd’s death (WARNING: GRAPHIC LANGUAGE).

Emotions are high across the country regarding both Mr. Floyd’s death as well as the ensuing protests and violence. There does not seem to be any consensus Right or Left opinion. It appears that those on the Right generally fall into a “law and order” camp & condemn the rioting, looting, arson. For example, prominent Conservative blogger, Matt Walsh, condemned people for defending the non-peaceful elements of the protests. Fox News host Tucker Carlson explained on his show that, “In any given year police kill more white suspects, armed and unarmed, than black suspects… Yet no one on television will ever say that because that fact threatens the scams they’re working.” A Tweet by President Donald Trump that called the looters “THUGS” and said, “when the looting starts, the shooting starts,” was censored by Twitter for “glorifying violence.” Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar Tweeted that, “Our anger is just. Our anger is warranted,” but also encouraged people to protest peacefully. Left-wing activist and filmmaker Michael Moore called the protestors burning down the Minneapolis 3rd Police Precinct, “Good citizens.”
