WASHINGTON, D.C. — Representative Ilhan Omar took to X (formerly Twitter) this week to launch a political broadside against Donald Trump, accusing him of threatening Social Security, Medicaid, veteran care, education, and civil rights. But a closer look at Omar’s record—and the actual facts—reveals that her statement is little more than partisan theatrics wrapped in populist rhetoric.
Omar claims to defend Social Security and Medicaid, yet she supports policies that threaten both. Mass illegal immigration, which Omar has championed, places immense strain on our welfare infrastructure. It’s not Trump who’s threatening these programs—it’s the Democrats’ open-border policies that drain public resources and overload systems meant for American citizens.
Let’s not forget: President Trump repeatedly promised not to touch Social Security or Medicare benefits. Instead, he focused on rebuilding the economy and securing jobs so that fewer people needed government dependency. Meanwhile, Democrats want to expand entitlements without addressing the financial sustainability of these programs—an approach destined to collapse under its own weight.
The Trump administration made historic investments in veterans' healthcare through programs like the VA MISSION Act, which gave veterans access to private care for the first time in decades. What did Omar do in response? She opposed many of Trump’s defense and veterans' initiatives under the guise of anti-war activism, yet offers no viable plan to support veteran services beyond vague slogans.
When Omar says “hands off our kids’ education,” what she really means is ‘keep our children under the thumb of union-controlled, failing public school systems.’ Trump and conservatives have consistently championed school choice—giving families the freedom to choose better educational opportunities. Omar, by contrast, stands with the teachers’ unions and opposes charter school expansions and voucher programs that disproportionately benefit low-income and minority families.
Omar speaks of defending “our rights” while supporting policies that infringe on religious liberty, parental authority, gun rights, and freedom of speech. She champions censorship in the name of fighting ‘misinformation,’ while aligning with radical groups that seek to criminalize dissent. Her concept of “rights” is elastic—reserved for those who agree with her worldview.
Under Trump, Americans saw stronger protections for religious institutions, more originalist judges appointed to defend constitutional rights, and a defense of the Second Amendment. Omar’s party, on the other hand, calls for packing the courts and redefining basic freedoms under the banner of progressivism.
Finally, Omar’s claim that she’s defending democracy is not only misguided—it’s fundamentally dishonest. America is a constitutional republic, not a direct democracy, and invoking "democracy" as a catch-all to justify progressive overreach is intellectually lazy. More troubling is Omar’s long-standing rhetoric and reported loyalty to her native Somalia, not the United States, which raises serious questions about her commitment to the country she swore to serve. Her participation in rallies where Hamas flags were flown further illustrates the dangerous ideological undercurrents of her platform. This isn’t about protecting American principles—this is about tearing them down from within.
Ilhan Omar’s “hands off” rhetoric isn’t about protecting the people—it’s about protecting the progressive agenda from accountability. Her record shows a commitment not to American families or constitutional rights, but to expanding government control under the guise of compassion. Voters should see through this fear-mongering and remember: actions speak louder than hashtags.
