WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a stunning reversal, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has agreed to deploy 10,000 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border following what she described as a “good” conversation with President Donald Trump. The move marks a major foreign policy victory for Trump, whose tough stance on border security is already delivering results just weeks into his return to the White House.
The announcement comes after months of escalating tensions between the U.S. and Mexico over the border crisis, with record-breaking illegal crossings and cartel activity surging under the Biden administration. Despite Sheinbaum’s earlier resistance to Trump’s immigration policies, her rapid concession signals that Mexico is now taking a different approach.
“After a productive and good conversation with President Trump, we have agreed to send 10,000 troops to strengthen enforcement at our northern border,” Sheinbaum said in a press conference.
While she attempted to frame the move as a bilateral effort, sources close to the negotiations suggest that Trump’s firm stance forced Mexico’s hand.
A senior U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated:
"Sheinbaum didn’t want this, but she had no choice. Trump made it clear that failure to cooperate would come with economic consequences for Mexico."
The deal is a stark contrast to Mexico’s defiant stance under the Biden administration, where illegal crossings skyrocketed past 2 million annually with little enforcement from Mexican authorities.
Unlike his predecessor, Trump wasted no time in pressuring Mexico to take responsibility. In just a few weeks, his administration:
Sheinbaum’s quick capitulation suggests that Trump’s economic leverage—combined with his no-nonsense approach—is already yielding results.
Sheinbaum’s move raises serious questions about the Biden administration’s failures on border security. Under Biden, Mexico routinely ignored U.S. requests for increased border enforcement, and cartel activity flourished due to a lack of consequences.
Trump’s ability to secure 10,000 Mexican troops without a drawn-out negotiation exposes just how weak Biden’s leadership had been.
"Why is it that Trump gets results in weeks, but Biden couldn’t in four years?" asked Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH). "The answer is simple: Trump commands respect. Biden was a doormat."
While Sheinbaum’s troop deployment is a major victory, the border crisis is far from solved. Trump has vowed to continue escalating enforcement, including:
Meanwhile, Democrats and left-wing media are already attacking Trump’s border strategy, arguing that Mexico’s cooperation could be short-lived.
But Trump remains unfazed, telling reporters:
"We will secure the border, no matter what. Mexico is finally stepping up because they know there’s a real leader back in the White House."
With 10,000 Mexican troops now mobilizing, Trump’s America First border policy is proving that strength works—and weakness never will.
